[SIC] DAY TWO HUNDRED NINETY
It was an art heavy weekend for me; I managed to get to The Hole for the Tiny Vices show before it closed yesterday, which was funny and highly nostalgic; many of the images included from friends like Peter Sutherland, Lenard Smith, Boogie and of course TV main man Tim Barber are burned into my brain from years of seeing them in magazines, at the office or in books I’ve collected. So many memories, as I wrote in the guestbook.
As I was nearing the end of my circuit through the show I texted Tim to say congrats, and he texted back that he was there on site, so we got to catch up a bit, which was great - he lives Upstate these days. He told me a little about both the recently relaunched Tiny Vices site and his newly inaugurated online bookstore Rectangle (which has a copy of my grail book “Go-Sees” right now, in case anyone’s feeling gifty haha). I’ve admired Tim’s eye and his acumen collecting and curating distinct work (often from artists who end up being significant) for years - and he’s a lovely dude to boot. The TV show is over now - but there’s lots to explore from it through the links above.
Immediately following that visit I dropped into Climax, the ‘books, videos and more’ shop founded by ex-Dazed EIC and now Acne Studios CMO Isabella Burley. It’s a funny little spot - light on inventory and heavy on ‘is it a fashion boutique or an adult video store’ vibes - but Darcy behind the counter there gave me a great overview and upsold me on Charlie Fox’s Flowers of Romance, one of the in-house publications, which is a low-gravity, charming tour of a very particular corner of pop culture where Tom Cruise and Chloe Sevigny are a couple and own several non-purebreed dogs.
From there I headed up to the AMC on 42nd Street to see Paolo Sorrentino’s Parthenope, courtesy of a free ticket from AAA24. The movie was good, and less horny than the trailer might imply (though Celeste Dalla Porta is stunning throughout), but that theater is a disaster - never again. Good date movie (tho Marcella was away and I went solo); go see.
Anyway - all that art and culture got me in my art bag (it having been Frieze Week in LA and all), so here’re some related links I collected over the weekend.
