Morning meander. Now Unlocked.
[SIC] DAY TWO HUNDRED SIXTY EIGHT
Babygirl casts a cynical eye on the post-MeToo workplace. This story of an office affair is free of sanctimony: the misconduct is too hot to handle. The gender-swapped version of this film would, it goes without saying, be so obviously evil that it would be banal: you’re telling me the CEO doesn’t like his wife in bed so he sleeps with the intern?
More cinema files: Pamela Anderson in the Criterion Closet. The actor and star of THE LAST SHOWGIRL talks about being profoundly inspired by Barbara Loden’s WANDA, shares her passion for the poetry of Abbas Kiarostami, and praises the style and craft of actors like Romy Schneider, Katharine Hepburn, and Jeanne Moreau.
Also unlikely but true: GQ and Bode to Host Super Bowl Fashion Show. The sports-meets-fashion event, including a runway show, will take place in New Orleans ahead of the American football championship in February
Style corollary: In 2025 we’re all going to be rushing to copy the sartorial aesthetics of fishermen. The time has come to start adding pictures of Jacques Cousteau and Irish sailors to your Pinterest boards, and embracing the idea of pairing Welly boots with a chunky knit sweater and red beanie
Speaking of fish: Bigmouth buffalo: The mysterious fish that live for a century and don't decline with age. Individuals have been documented to reach up to 127 years of age, making them the world's longest-lived freshwater fish. They also don't seem to decline biologically with age. Most recently, researchers have realised that their stable population sizes over recent decades could be thanks to the fact that these old fish are not dying, even as they fail to produce young that survive into adulthood.
Also aging well: The best vintage and retro shopping in New York. Second-hand clothing is having a youth-fuelled moment. Here’s where to find the resales of the century
Apropos of vintage: Inside Mildew magazine, the publication revelling in the “decay” of fashion. The annual magazine’s latest issue continues its quest to uplift a more sustainable fashion landscape alongside the characters and clothes behind it.
Also decaying: What happens to marketers when the cultural 'cheat code' of TikTok is gone? TikTok has been a cultural spigot of sorts for marketers in recent years. So what happens when that spigot is shut off?
For one thing: Users are downloading another Chinese app, Xiaohongshu, as TikTok’s fate hangs in the balance in the US. “The style of content on TikTok is unique and so many people have found a sense of community on the app. I figured I might as well download it and see if I genuinely think it could be a replacement to TikTok.”
Because?! Tiktok doesn’t need America. Not only is America not TikTok’s biggest audience, it’s not even the largest amount of users they’ve lost to a country-level ban. Right now, TikTok’s biggest user base is Indonesia, where it has about 160 million monthly active users. [Next]: the US and Brazil, both with around 100 million users. And when the Indian government banned TikTok in 2020, there were around 200 million Indian users on the app, double the amount they currently have in the US.
